Patriot Basketball
The Patriot Pioneers are heading into the 2023-2024 season with high expectations of a trip back to the Siegel Center. The Pioneers fell short last year to the Hayfield Hawks in the class 6 state championship game. With the losses of Jay Randall, Kaden Bates, and Nas Coleman, the team had some voids to fill on both sides of the floor.
Year after year, the Pioneers lose All-State caliber players to graduation, and always seem to reload their roster. This year appears to be no different. Before the beginning of the summer break, Head Coach Sherman Rivers received notice from Tey Barbour (last year's Cedar Run District Player of the Year) that he would be transferring to Patriot for his senior year.
With the addition of Barbour, and the key returners like; Isaiah Vick, Desmond Hopkins, Mekhi Dilliard, Abe Halim and Ryan Keenan, this team has once again become a favorite to make a state title run in the class 6 division. The Pioneers will be battle tested throughout the year after scheduling a plethora of teams from all over the DMV and two teams from the beach area.
Patriot opens their season on the road against the class 5 state champion Woodside at the Cavalier Tip Off Classic at Princess Anne High School. They also face state quarterfinalist and regional runner-up Forest Park, Class 5 state quarterfinalist Stone Bridge and Hayfield, as well as Riverdale Baptist and Grace Brethren.
Coach Rivers believes in the process and is looking forward to his team’s response to adversity along the way.
